Students 2005

I really liked the GEMS Program. It is both what I thought it would be and what I didn’t think it would be.  It is more work that I expected, but I’ve connected with other people better than I thought. The counselors are real cool. When we first heard that the counselors were graduates I thought about some really strict geeks, looks like I was wrong. Dorm life is AWESOME!!  I love being in a dorm environment. It gives you more independence. I feel more like an adult. I’m an only child so I’m always smothered so this helps me be more on my own.  Something interesting about me is that I like singing, dancing and being dramatic. I love sports. I run track and enjoy playing soccer, volleyball and basketball.  In five years, I see myself attending Howard University preparing to start my junior year as a biology major.

I think this program is very interesting; I really like the bio experiments. We got to experience dorm life, which was also fun. The counselors and faculty are really fun.  They helped make our transition into dorm life easier. I love dorm life! Something interesting about me is that I lived in Japan and Germany.  In five years, I see myself in college.

Overall I think the program is great. We get to learn a lot, while we have fun.  I enjoyed the trips, but I enjoyed all the new girls I meet the most. My thoughts about the faculty and counselors are that they are a huge reason why the program is great.  I really like Dr. Shahin because he has a great sense of humor.  I like Ms. Davis, who is patient with me when I need her help.  All the counselors have treated us so nicely.  They became friends with all of us, all of them are sweethearts.  This program allows us to experience dorm life, which I think is great.  I enjoyed sharing a home with so many nice people.  I also like it because we get to prepare for college.  Something interesting about me is that I am involved in two great clubs at my school.  I participate in a program that helps build schools in Africa by raising money, and sending kids to help with the construction.  I also take part of the Spanish Honors Society, which I love because I get do something related to my heritage.  In five years, I am positive to see myself attending a University, studying civil engineering.

GEMS is a program that lets you experience the math and science fields in a more challenging way.  The counselors and the faculty are an important aspect of the GEMS Program, they make the stay relaxing and entertaining.  It’s a lot of fun.  It’s like having a sleepover every night.  Stephanie and I had the most fun terrorizing the other students.  I without Steph I am like Austin Powers without his mojo.  Something interesting about me is that my birthday is on December 31 and I like to party.  In five years, I see myself as the richest woman in the world and married to Shamar Moore.

I think that this program is a great experience for me.  It’s helpful yet fun at the same time.  The counselors and faculty both are extremely friendly.  Therefore it is very easy to get along with them.  I feel as if I can talk to them about any problems and they would listen.  Dorm life is really fun, although you have to do everything for yourself.  But hey that’s life!  Something interesting about me is that I would like to live in Australia after I am done with college.  In exactly five years, I see myself graduating from college and going off to graduate school to get my Master’s Degree in something, I’m not sure what yet!

I think GEMS has proved to be a wonderful experience, both education wise as well as socially. The girls were able to mingle with the counselors and their colleagues.  The activities taught us how essential it is to pursue a math or science career in order to have a successful future.  The faculty and counselors are great!  They have created a very friendly atmosphere for us so that we feel like we’re home.  I appreciate and thank them for their assistance and guidance.  I personally wouldn’t have been as comfortable here if it weren’t for them!  Dorm life is actually amusing because now we have to be individuals and take responsibility rather than our parents doing it for us.  I also like it because you get to know your fellow students a little better and get to spend a little more time with them.  Something interesting about me is I love to dance and I have played the violin for six years.  My name means midnight and I have a monkey fetish.  In five years, I will probably be a senior in college, pursuing a pharmaceutical degree and getting ready for medical school.

I think the program is a really great idea especially since Mathematics and Science are areas that have a huge shortage of women.  I also love that we live on a college campus so that we see what college life and dorm life is like.  The counselors and faculty are all very nice and approachable.  I feel like these are all people that I would love to get to know more about me and become my friends.  I especially like the counselors because they treat us with respect instead of little children.  I like dorm life because of the closeness.  I think the people in my suite could become like my family.  I do not mind having to share the rooms at all because all of the girls are kind and easy to talk to.  Something interesting about me is that I have been taking Italian for 3 years and would love to participate in an exchange program to Rome.  In five years, I see myself attending a Pre-med program in college while taking electives in Computer Science.

This program is excellent.  It gives you a sense of independence and a feel of college life.  This program is definitely going to change my outlook on life.  GEMS gives girls an opportunity to feel supported and encouraged to succeed.  I love the counselors, I could not have asked for anything better.  Ashanti is the greatest, Amber and Dee are the best, Delphine is a sweetheart and it might only be three weeks, but I love them.  Dr. Shahin is awesome; he is one of the most hilarious, smartest people I’ve ever met.  I am so thankful for him for this program.  I also am thankful for Patrice because without her I know that it would not have been possible.  I really loved the feeling of being independent.  I didn’t have a chance to share a room with someone, but it was a great experience having my whole suite as roommates.  I love them.  They’re all so great in their own way.  Something interesting about me is I love the field of law.  I have weird passion for law and helping others.  I also love Mickey Mouse, he is so cute!!  In five years, I see myself in graduate school or law school working in a top law firm or international company like American Express.  I will be living in downtown New York in a condo in front of Central Park with a cute puppy and a gorgeous foreign boyfriend.  I just see myself happy!

This program is thorough.  If I could I would do it again.  The classes are fun at times, but the trips that we go on are more fun.  The counselors are bangin’.  They are like friends who you can talk to and chill with for any reason.  They are like little kids who graduated college.  The GEMS administration chose the best counselors for us.  I will definitely stay in contact with every one of them including the faculty.  Dorm life seems mad fun and interesting.  Living with a roommate seems nice.  Getting to know and living with someone who goes to your school.  Something interesting about me is that I play a lot of sports for each season.  In five years, I see myself in my third year of college, still playing sports and thinking about graduate school.

The GEMS program has been such a unique and rewarding experience for me. Meeting new people and listening to Dr. Shahin is something I’ll never forget. The counselors have been something like a big sister, watching out for us, yet still able to laugh with us. As for dorm life, there could be nothing more tiring yet exciting. All of us have stayed up late at least once, whether it was reading Harry Potter or playing cards. Some interesting things about me are that I am in a swim team. I am the New York State FCCLA state Treasure, and that I play the saxophone. I assume that I will be in college in five years, but I’m not sure where or what I will be majoring in.

This program is a great experience.  Not only is it educational, but I have met so many great people that I would never have met if I did not attend GEMS.  The faculty and counselors are really nice.  They make the program more enjoyable, especially Dr. Shahin, who has a good sense of humor.  Dorm life is a learning experience.  You take responsibility for your own actions, which really prepares you for the future.  It was also fun because you have friends who support you.  Something interesting about me is that I love to watch football.  I’m into Eagles green. I also performed under the conduction of Christoph Eschenbach, the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra.  In five years, I will probably be finishing undergraduate school.

The program is well organized.  It is a highly educational and college-like life.  We are exposed to a wide range of careers in science and mathematics.  My thoughts about the faculty and counselors are that they are very protective.  However they are friendly and helpful.  In general some are more flexible than others, while others are more serious.  My thoughts about dorm life are many.  The bed is stiff, the air conditioner never works, there are some bugs in the windows, and worst of all there is little time to sleep.  I miss my room with all the commodities I enjoy there.  Something interesting about me is that I was born in the United States, but although both my parents were born in Ecuador I do not understand their native language.  In five years, I see myself as a graduate and 22 year old.

I think it’s awesome that there are programs like this for girls.  This program is really helpful and you also get to meet new people from all over.  The counselors and the faculty are really great people!  They’re nice and caring.  All the counselors are really easy to talk to and care about all of us.  The teachers are all fun and make the classes interesting.  The dorms are pretty nice.  They are better than some that I’ve been in, although the shower is way too small.  I love all my suite mates and hanging out at night in the lounge areas.  Something interesting about me is that I’ve been learning Spanish for three years and my family is from Sierra Leone.  In five years, I see myself going into my junior year of college, majoring in Forensic Chemistry and enjoying life.

This program allowed me to experience something new.  I like the fact that I was surrounded by girls with different backgrounds.  I learned many new things from them.  I love the counselors.  They’re so friendly and down to earth.  I think GEMS picked the best women to be our counselors.  I also learned a lot from them.  They allowed us to be ourselves.  Being at the dorm was when I had the most fun.  Armentha Gray was my buddy in crime.  We were always laughing, singing, dancing and being silly.  Something interesting about me is that I like to have fun and take advantage of my youth.  In five years, I see myself finishing college. I will be starting a successful career and starting a business.

I really like the program.  The students including the teachers are really nice.  The program is really organized and I like how it has a lot to do with math and science.  The counselors are really nice and they react to you.  They also help you a lot during classes and make sure you’re on task.  The faculty is also really nice to the students as well.  I like the dorms because it has air conditioning.  Also the dorm life is very exciting and fun because you get to communicate with other students.  Something interesting about me is I like to travel.  I also love playing the keyboard.  In five years, I see myself in one of these dorms going to class everyday in my second year of college.

Attending this program is the smartest choice in spending my summer.  I never expected that the counselors and faculty will be really nice to us and treat us as if they have known us for years.  Meeting them is just a once in a lifetime opportunity which I will forever be thankful for.  To live in a place with different kinds of people, be really close to them, and feel like you are all one big happy family, are the coolest and the most amazing things on earth.  Something interesting about me is that I can play the piano, keyboard and a little bit of guitar. In five years, I see myself as a college student taking premed and being the same person whom GEMS people first met during the summer of 2005.

The GEMS program has been an exciting experience.  I love the friendly atmosphere and I especially like the fun field trips that we take.  I always go away more knowledgeable and intrigued about the world around me and the math and science behind its intricacies.  The counselors and faculty make the program exciting and enjoyable.  All of the teachers are so enthusiastic about their work and I love interacting with them.  The counselors are so much fun to be around and both the counselors and faculty are an encouragement to me.  Here at Delaware State University, dorm life has been an interesting experience (especially having Katherine as my neighbor…just kidding Katherine).  You are the funniest person I know! I have enjoyed having Sini as my roommate.  I just hope that I will have a roommate as nice and sweet as her when I go to college.  Something interesting about me is that I play the flute in my church’s orchestra at Middletown Baptist.  In five years, I see myself graduating from college and starting my career as a nurse.

In my opinion, I think this program is a lot of fun.  We do a lot of work, but at the end of the week, it’s all worth it!  The counselors/faculty are really nice to everyone.  Our counselors are like big sisters to us.  They always look out for us.  We can go to the counselors for anything and they always make us laugh.  Dorm life is very different, but it’s the most fun you can ever have.  If you have a good roommate, like mine, dorm life will be nothing but fun.  Something interesting about me is I’m really shy until I get to know someone.  In five years, I will hopefully be in my second year at Princeton University majoring in biology.

This is a very nice program.  All the subjects are of college level.  By being in this program, people can get a closer look at the college life (living in a dorm).  The teachers/counselors are wonderful.  If something happened to us, they will take care of us as their own children.  The dorm life is pretty fun.  Once you get to know everyone, you can have a lot of fun in the dorms.  I really like the dorm and I enjoyed staying there.  Something interesting about me is that I can speak two languages and I really enjoy listening to music.  I see myself in college, probably an undergraduate student in five years.

I’m so glad that the program is relaxed and yet productive.  We have enough time to socialize and get to know everyone, but also get a chance to learn new things in an environment much less stressful than normal school.  The counselors and faculty made me feel so welcome on the first day.  Their sense of humor makes the whole atmosphere so enjoyable.  This was my first experience staying in a dorm without my family, so it’s all new to me.  I love having the opportunity to bond with the girls in the dorm after classes.  Something interesting about me is that I performed around Nottingham, England for about a week with a Bahá’í dance group based out of Philadelphia.  In five years, I hope to be in college studying psychology or another science or doing some kind of service to humanity.

I think the GEMS program is great.  It is a fun way to introduce high school girls to college level math and science.  I personally enjoy it very much, especially the math.  The counselors are fun and helpful.

They help the students in numerous ways.  They like to have fun so we can relate to them.  The faculty is also fun.  They try their best to teach us as much as they can.  Dorm life is very different from home life.  It’s fun and comfortable.  I could easily adapt to the dorm life here.  My roommate is easy to live with and nice.  All the students and counselors are like a family.  Something interesting thing about me is that I’m from Ghana and I speak three languages.  I see myself graduating college and moving into graduate school, hopefully at University of Pennsylvania in five years.

I think this program is a good opportunity for me to expand my knowledge about my favorite subjects; math, biology, and computers.  It was not at all what I thought it would be, full of 24-hour study freaks.  But so far I’ve had so much fun being with the rest of the GEMS and the faculty.  I really enjoyed myself.  The GEMS faculty could have not been nicer.  They take responsibility over us, and take us places (even across the suites) and are so sweet.  I feel like I’m in a sleepover with people I’ve known for a long time, every night is a party.   Something interesting about me is that I am obsessed with the musical Wicked, I love music!  In 5 years, I see myself still dreaming to be a pediatrician.
