Goal
The Girls Exploration in Mathematics and Science is an enrichment
program designed to stimulate and extend the interest of young
women in the fields of mathematics, biology, and information
technology. Its purpose is to encourage them to investigate
careers in these disciplines.
GEMS offers enjoyable, hands-on experimentation combined
with an extensive use of technology. The participants will
also conduct group research projects. This program is held the last two weeks of July, on the campus of Delaware
State University. Minority students are encouraged to apply.
Benefits
-An opportunity to interact with college students,
mathematicians, and other distinguished guests.
-A chance to taste the college life and learn
from highly qualified college professors who will conduct
all activities.
-An opportunity to qualify for future scholarships
at Delaware State University.
The Program
-The classrooms, science labs, and computer labs at Delaware State
University will be the setting for small group instructions with hands-on
activites in mathematics, biology, and information technology.
- Major Mathematics Theme: Modeling discrete time, real
life situations with difference equations with a focus on
modeling biological systems.
- Computer-Based Activities: Individual and small group
sessions will be held every day to explore mathematicals concepts,
build and investigate mathematical models, and analyze data
from biological systems.
- Major Biology Theme: Participants will carry out experiments
related to neuroscience and behavior. They will explore the
biological basis of sensory perception, study the formation
of memories, and learn about the anatomy of the human brain.
- Major Information Technology Theme: Learning about key
technologies necessary to store, retrieve, and present information
on the World Wide Web using HTML, Javascript, and
graphics software used to enhance web pages.
To Parents
Students will be housed in secure, on campus residence halls.
